As rebellions broke out in Indonesia in May of 1998, protestors immediately took to the Internet before they took to the streets. The Internet provided a means to bypass press censorship where dissidents shared information about protests by email, posted eye witness accounts to newsgroups, and used “chat rooms” to exchange information on upcoming protests and troop location, as well as to make contact with supporters outside the country.
