FACTS OF THE CASE:
AAAS is pleased to announce the release of Leith Shubeilat, the head of the Engineers' Union and a leader in the Jordanian opposition, under a special amnesty on 8 November 1996. Shubeilat was arrested on 9 December 1995, apparently for the non-violent expression of his political views. He was sentenced on 17 March 1996 to three years imprisonment on charges of "shameful act that is directed against the king." King Hussein bin Talal reportedly drove to Swaqa Prison and personally informed Shubeilat of his released. The King then drove Shubeilat to his mother's house in Amman.
