AAAS has obtained the following names of individuals who are among scores of individuals suspected of supporting or sympathizing with the Libyan Islamic Group who were arrested in June 1998:

The imprisonment of the more than thirty scientists whose names are listed above constitute serious violations of Libya's international obligations under the United Nations Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. They include:

  • Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person, and to freely take part in public affairs and political life (Articles 9 and 25);
  • everyone has the right to freedom of expression (Article 19.2); and
  • everyone has the right to freedom of association (Artice 22).
