Tools

A wide variety of potentially useful open source and commercial software solutions are available.

GDAL Utilities
GDAL is a translator library for raster geospatial data formats that is released under an X/MIT style Open Source license by the Open Source Geospatial Foundation. As a library, it presents a single abstract data model to the calling application for all supported formats. It also comes with a variety of useful command line utilities for data translation and processing.

GeoCommons
GeoCommons allows users to upload and visualize data on a map. Public data from other users can also be used to create unique maps, which can then be downloaded as a KML or shared with others.

GeoServer
GeoServer is an open source software server written in Java that allows users to share and edit geospatial data. Designed for interoperability, it publishes data from any major spatial data source using open standards.

Geo Visitors
This tool will automatically detect where in the world visitors are coming from when they visit your site.

Geovisualization Tools Development
As part of a broader program of data visualization research, National Cancer Institute staff and their collaborators have developed a number of methods to better communicate cancer statistics visually, such as by maps and new graph designs.

GeoViz Toolkit
The GeoViz Toolkit supports systematic analysis of spatial, temporal, and attribute data sets. It allows analysts to discover previously hidden patterns in data, moving from spatial patterns to statistical patterns and back again by mixing and matching data visualization components to quickly construct custom analysis tools. Components are automatically coordinated across multiple views to enable insight into highly multivariate data, especially geographically organized data. Potential applications range from research in public health (e.g., infectious disease dynamics or cancer etiology, surveillance, and control), through analysis of socioeconomic and demographic data in support of both research and public policy, to exploration of (more)...

GeoXP
GeoXp is a tool for researchers in spatial statistics, spatial econometrics, geography, ecology etc allowing to link dynamically statistical plots with elementary maps. This coupling consists in the fact that the selection of a zone on the map results in the automatic highlighting of the corresponding points on the statistical graph or reversely the selection of a portion of the graph results in the automatic highlighting of the corresponding points on the map. GeoXp includes tools from different areas of spatial statistics including geostatistics as well as spatial econometrics and point processes.

Google Earth
Google Earth is a stand-alone GIS application that allows the user to explore the globe. GE provides historical satellite imagery, transportation routes, geotagged photos, and more.

Google Fusion Tables
Google Fusion Tables allows you to import and visualize table data online. Upload data tables from spreadsheets or csv files up to 100mb large. Tables can be viewed as maps or charts and then filtered for more selective visualizations.

Google Maps
Google Maps is a web-based mapping application that allows users to trace routes and create maps with placemarks. Primarily vector-based, Google Maps can be embedded in webpages via the Google Maps API.
