Chapter 1: A Few Essential Concepts

Cases of Political Violence

The following factors were considered in order to define the cases presented in this study as acts of political violence: the characteristics of the victims and the perpetrators, the way in which the act was committed, and the way in which the facts were described in written sources or witness testimony. The analysis also includes some acts allegedly committed by governmental or insurgent forces, which the press or witnesses described as personally motivated, since they were committed in the context of counterinsurgency or social struggle.
