In recognition of International Human Rights Day, the AAAS Science and Human Rights Program hosted its third annual Human Rights Day Celebration on December 10th, 2003. On this day, AAAS traditionally honors a scientist who has made lifelong contributions to the science and human rights community. This year we were pleased to honor Dr. Irving Lerch, a tireless human rights advocate, longtime friend of the Science and Human Rights Program, and Staff Advisor to the American Physical Society's Committee on the International Freedom of Scientists.

Before the award ceremony, friends and guests mingled at the reception. Dr. Al Teich, Director of the AAAS Science and Policy Program Directorate presented Irving with a plaque that honored him for his "tireless advocacy on behalf of scientific freedom and the human rights of scientists worldwide."

SHR profiled the APS Committee on the International Freedom of Scientist in the Summer 2003 Report on Science and Human Rights Newsletter.
