Food subsidies cancelled
Without adequate compensatory measures

Type of entry: Potential Violation

Subsidies for basic foods for groups threatened by hunger or malnutrition, such as rice or flour, are cancelled by the government, without introducing a replacement programme to ensure that the poorest people can afford to buy adequate food. However, across the board food subsidies are often an inefficient way to combat hunger and malnutrition. If replaced by a more effective system, then this may not constitute a violation.
